Challenging Saturday coming up
// October 10th, 2009 // Journal
I love our New Media Cincinnati get togethers. It’s a chance for Vickie and I to visit with old friends and meet new ones. These are people who do what we do and more and more people that want to know what we do. It’s a great group that meets the second Saturday of the month at The Pub in Rookwood. Therein lies the problem! A great restaurant that has great tasting food, but none of it on my diet. How does someone on a fresh start deal with sitting in a place like this, you might ask?
My day will be best served if I plan ahead. Going out for a day like today can trash your diet, if you let it. Fortunately, planning your meals and spreading them out will allow you to adjust for days like today. I will probably start the day with eggs & a piece of toast. Before we go to the event, I will probably stop somewhere for a salad. The vegetables in the salad will fill me up, but not load me up on calories. With the excitement of the event, I probably won’t even notice being hungry anyway, but being full going in will help avoid the urge to snack on their tasty treats.
After the event, I will focus on some more protein and vegetables. This will fill out the rest of my major calories for the day. I will also supplement with fruit throughout the day. Grapes and apples are easy to eat, so they are great for days like today. I really like oranges, but they are a mess to eat. So, I really need to eat those at home.
Salads can be your friend or your enemy. Load up your salad with vegetables, like peppers, tomatoes, carrots or cucumbers. Find a low calorie dressing you like, because dressing is where most of us destroy the calorie count of a salad. It certainly makes it tasty, but if you use a lot or one high in calories you can add 300-600 calories.
So, when you are heading out for a busy day, always plan ahead to keep your options open and keep on the food plan. I can do it, so can you! Have a great weekend!

Just a followup.
This morning, I had scrambled eggs, steamed hash browns and a piece of wheat toast. At our event today, I had 1/4 of Vickie’s burger, then tonight we went to Bob Evans, where I had the single grilled chicken breast with mixed vegetables and broccoli florets.
Not bad for a day on the run.
Don,
It was great to see you tonight. I really enjoyed talking with you and Vickie! I’m so excited to see you getting serious about living a healthy lifestyle and I love tag line of “one man’s journey to getting back to be the man God desires you to be”
That is awesome stuff!
Keep at it my friend!
Cliff
I was just reminded of this post, and I’m a bit more convinced of my own need for more salads in my diet.
